Sweat conductivity and coulometric quantitative test in neonatal cystic fibrosis screening.
OBJECTIVE To compare the results obtained with the sweat test using the conductivity method and coulometric measurement of sweat chloride in newborns (NBs) with suspected cystic fibrosis (CF) in the neonatal screening program. METHODS The sweat test was performed simultaneously by both methods in children with and without CF. The cutoff values to confirm CF were >50 mmol/L in the conductivity...
متن کاملNeonatal screening for cystic fibrosis.
Two groups of patients with cystic fibrosis were compared. The screened group, detected with an improved neonatal screening assay for immunoreactive trypsin, developed fewer chest infections requiring treatment and gained more weight than the unscreened group. Early diagnosis by screening seems to affect early morbidity.
متن کاملProtracted neonatal hypertrypsinogenaemia, normal sweat chloride, and cystic fibrosis.
The cystic fibrosis (CF) clinical spectrum has greatly expanded in the past few years, including atypical forms with low sweat chloride concentrations. Two cases are presented which suggest that children detected by neonatal CF screening whose trypsinogen concentrations are still raised by the second month of age could, despite a negative sweat test, be affected by an atypical CF with fully exp...
متن کاملSweat conductivity test: can it replace chloride titration for cystic fibrosis diagnosis?
Although sweat conductivity values are well matched with chloride concentrations for cystic fibrosis (CF) diagnosis, sweat conductivity is not accepted as a definitive diagnostic tool but only a screening method. The aim of this study was to compare the sweat chloride measurements and sweat conductivity values of our patients, and to determine cut-off values of conductivity for making or exclud...
متن کاملSweat testing in newborns positive to neonatal screening for cystic fibrosis.
Sweat chloride concentrations above 40 mmol/l are unusual in newborns screened for cystic fibrosis and should be followed up. Centiles of sweat chloride concentrations in newborns positive to cystic fibrosis neonatal screening are presented. There are no significant correlations between age at sweat testing and sweat chloride concentration or quantity of sweat collected.
